About this place
Climb above Settle's rooftops to the flagpole on Castleberg Crag, the limestone outcrop overlooking the town centre. This short outing combines a woodland ascent with a view across Settle, but the steep ground makes it more demanding than a stroll around town.
Finding the walk
From Market Place, head uphill along Constitution Hill. A woodland entrance on the right gives access to the hillside paths, including the Tot Lord Trail. Follow the winding paths uphill towards the flagpole. There is also a gated entrance from Castleberg Lane. Check the notices at the entrances and follow the paths through the woods rather than approaching up the rock face.
Underfoot and at the viewpoint
Expect a steep ascent on uneven, stony ground, with a rocky scramble near the top. Rain can make the stones slippery, so choose dry conditions and wear walking shoes or boots with good grip. Allow time for a careful descent too. The summit route is unsuitable for pushchairs and visitors who need a level, step-free path; the crag can also be seen from the town below.
Keep well back from the cliff edge and supervise children closely. Loose rock has been reported at the crag; avoid standing beneath climbers. Follow any temporary closure notices on site and turn back if the conditions or terrain are beyond your comfort level.
Parking and local context
Use a public town-centre car park and walk to the start. The lanes around the crag are narrow residential streets, so leave the entrances and residents' access clear.
Castleberg has attracted visitors for centuries. Its slopes once formed pleasure gardens, with planted paths and amusements enjoyed by local people and railway excursion groups. The wooded hillside still includes plants from those gardens and is managed by Settle Town Council for visitors and wildlife.
